Hybrid drive is one of the most exciting areas of development in the automotive industry and promises to deliver very significant environmental benefits in the future. Many of the leading manufacturers either have, or are in the advanced stages of developing, hybrid vehicles.
The market is growing rapidly. In the United States, 220,000 hybrid vehicles were sold in 2005. In 2006 this has accelerated even more with the introduction of new models. Toyota has recently announced that it has passed the half million mark for its Prius.
The environmental benefits of hybrid vehicles arise from the fact that they seamlessly integrate an internal combustion engine, an electric motor and a high-powered battery.
The battery provides power for the electric motor and is recharged by recapturing energy that would normally be lost when decelerating or coasting. This recapturing of energy is called regenerative braking and significantly enhances the economy of the whole package. If needed, power from the engine can be diverted to recharge the battery as well.
Taking the concept even further, ‘Plug-in’ technology is being actively pursued by a number of manufacturers and this allows vehicle users to connect their vehicles to a mains power supply which will in turn charge the on-board batteries and give the vehicles a greater range (and thus fuel economy) under electric power alone. A Toyota Prius with ‘plug-in’ capability has achieved 120 miles per gallon in recent tests. The real environmental benefits of this technology will only be achieved if the electricity is generated from renewable sources.
